MICROZEST’24: Annual Microbiology Fest
by - Isha Srivastava (M.Sc, III Semester)
MicroZest is a day we celebrate annually, to break the monotony of academics
and research work, and was first established by the batch of 2018. It is a day full
of fun events, where we learn a bit more about each other, and a day we
celebrate microbiology out of our classrooms and labs.
On November 21st, 2024, everyone in the department—professors,
non-teaching staff, PhD scholars, and MSc students—came together in the
biotech auditorium, filled with excitement and energy, to celebrate what makes
our department truly special!
The day kicked off with an inspiring talk from Swati Ma’am, along with our
wonderful professors. We had a full day ahead, packed with fun competitions
and performances—from a team quiz to a streak art contest and Ad Mad! It was
a delightful surprise to see how creative and playful our professors can be!
After all the excitement and laughter, we were treated to a much-needed lunch
break. It gave everyone a chance to relax and chat casually with one another.
Later, our professors took a moment to recognize the impressive
accomplishments within the department, presenting medals to the winners,
which added a special touch of pride and appreciation to the already joyful
atmosphere.
After the awards ceremony, we made our way back to the department, where the fun continued with a lively rangoli competition. The themes were inspired by
Nobel Prize winners, bioengineering, and the microbiome, and the rangolis
created by the students were truly impressive—both beautiful and full of
creative flair. The mood was upbeat, with festive music playing, people
snapping pictures, and everyone chatting and connecting with their seniors, all
while enjoying a welcome break from the usual academic grind.
As the day wrapped up, we all felt a strong sense of satisfaction and happiness,
knowing the fest had created memories we’d cherish for a long time. It wasn’t
just another event; it was a true reflection of the vibrant energy that makes our
department so unique. The excitement, the fun, and the connections we made
will stay with us, helping to strengthen the bond and pride we share as a
community.
A big thank you to our faculty for always supporting our ideas and to all the
students and scholars for jumping in with so much enthusiasm. This day
wouldn’t have been possible without your involvement. Together, we made it a day we’ll never forget!

The day started with an enlightening addressal by Rajeev sir and our fellow professors, followed by a spectacular dance performance by MSc(previous) girls. We had a jam-packed schedule filled with an array of competitions, and performances -from a team quiz to scribble, to streak art competition and Ad Mad! Who knew our professors were so creative and fun!
In a break from the intense intellectual engagement, and laughter, a delightful lunch session was waiting for us. This not only provided a moment of relaxation but also facilitated informal interactions and discussions among the participants.
Distinguished professors, acknowledging the exemplary achievements within the department, awarded medals to the deserving winners, adding a touch of honour and recognition to the festive atmosphere.
After the awards distribution, we moved back to our department where the excitement continued in the form of a rangoli competition. The atmosphere was set by the students by playing festive music and enjoying themselves, taking pictures, and interacting with their seniors for something other than academics.
A memorable group photograph captured the essence of unity and shared accomplishments as students, professors, and PhD scholars gathered outside the building.
As the day concluded with a sense of fulfilment and accomplishment, the fest left an indelible mark on the department's collective memory. It was not merely an event but a testament to the thriving spirit of our department. The success, excitement, and bonding experienced on this day, punctuated by the shared lunch, will undoubtedly serve as inspiration for the future, reinforcing the sense of unity and pride within our department.
We would like to thank our faculty for constantly supporting our ideas, and all the students and scholars for their enthusiastic participation, without which it would not be possible. Together we made it a day to remember!

To break the monotony of academics and research work, it was suggested by the students of M.Sc. microbiology, that a cultural fest be organized annually, wherein the students and staff can interact and gain knowledge through participation in various fun activities.
Following up on this suggestion, our department celebrated the first ever Microbiology Day, on 28 th September, 2018. The M.Sc. (Final year) students, through a lot of hard work and dedication, managed to do a commendable job of not only organizing the event, but also wrapping it up well within the time limit.
Moreover, the enthusiasm with which the students participated in the plethora of activities was unbelievable. There were a lot to choose from, including Quiz, Streak Art, Rangoli, JAM and Dumb charades. Some of the ‘Microphiles’ were excited enough to participate in all five events! By 10 am, the Biotech Auditorium was buzzing with activity.
The competitions were judged by our respected professors, and the winners were awarded cash prizes, and the ones who did not win were definitely rewarded with a day full of fond memories!
The day was concluded with a much needed group photograph, and a delicious buffet, which was the final icing on the cake.
Doing justice to its name, MICROZEST was indeed a day for those with a zest for Microbiology, and one can be certain that it has become one of the most awaited events of our department.
We are obliged to all the organizers for their flawless execution, our faculty for supporting our ideas with their constant motivation, and also the rest of the department for their enthusiastic participation, which led this event to be a huge success, and the day, a one to cherish.
